The sight of an armed citizen drawing his firearm deterred a knife-wielding attacker in North Haven, Conn., police say.

Just after 11:30 a.m. on October 24, police responded to an incident where a man allegedly threatened the armed citizen, who was legally carrying a handgun. The victim told officers that the 45-year-old suspect charged at him with a knife. The victim drew his handgun, the sight of which deterred the attacker and caused him to flee the scene in a vehicle.

Officers found a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle nearby and located the suspect inside of a local business. The man was taken into custody and faces charges of second-degree threatening, illegal possession of a deadly weapon and second-degree breach of peace. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dickerson were asleep in their north Nashville, Tenn., home when Mrs. Dickerson was awakened by a prowler, apparently in the bedroom. She awakened her husband, who reached for his .357 Mag. revolver, getting it just in time to meet a lunging attack by the thwarted burglar. Dickerson fired once, felling his assailant. Police did not charge Dickerson in the shooting. "Mr. Dickerson was protecting his life, his wife and his property," said a police spokesman. (The Banner; Nashville, Tenn.)
