Around 3:30 p.m., a woman who was home alone heard noises that prompted her to investigate. She saw a man attempting to gain entry to her home through a window. The resident warned the man to stop. When he continued through the window, however, the woman ran to the next room to retrieve her handgun. She fired once, striking the intruder in the chest. He fled the scene, but collapsed in the street nearby. The gunshot wound proved fatal. (The Detroit News, Detroit, Mich., 3/1/14)

Around 10:18 a.m., a resident was startled by a sound in the rear of her home. She confronted a 43-year-old intruder who had broken a window to gain entry. The resident called for her son, who also confronted the intruder. The assailant retrieved a hammer from his vehicle and made his way back inside the home. The resident's son retrieved his own weapon, a .45 caliber handgun, causing the assailant to flee the property. The son fired the gun into the assailant's vehicle when he tried to run him over as he drove off. He was later arrested and faces burglary charges. No injuries were reported. (The Elkhart Truth, Leesburg, Ind., 8/1/14)

From The Armed Citizen® Archives December 1967: Charles Smith, owner of Smith Motor Sales, Carbondale, Ill., and his son surprised a burglar trying to blow torch his way into their office safe. Smith pulled a pistol and fired when the man reached into his pocket, apparently for a weapon. Police arrested the wounded man and two others on a burglary charge. (Evansville, Ind., Courier)
