Colt’s Manufacturing has recently discovered a potential safety issue with a limited number of modern sporting rifles (MSRs) it produced beginning March 5, 2021. The company has voluntarily initiated a recall to protect the safety of its customers because, under certain conditions, it is possible that some of the firearms may discharge a second round when the trigger is released if a live cartridge is in the chamber.
To prevent the possibility of death or serious personal injury, Colt advises anyone who has purchased a Colt MSR since March 5, 2021, to stop using it immediately and visit ColtRepairMSR.com or call customer service at (800) 971-3216 to determine if their specific MSR is affected. Colt discovered that hammers that do not meet the company’s specifications were installed in certain MSRs. In keeping with the company’s commitment to the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction the issue will be corrected by replacing the hammers in affected guns.
The recall covers only a portion of MSRs manufactured beginning on March 5, 2021, and includes the following models: AR15A4, CR6700A4, CR6920, CR6920-EPR, CR6920MPS-B, CR6921, CR6921-EPR, CR6933, CR6933-EPR, CR6960, LE6920-EPR, LE6920MPS-B, LE6920-OEM1, LE6920-OEM2, LE6920-R, LE6933-EPR, SP633784 and LE6920SOCOM.
Serial numbers and model markings of the MSRs potentially subject to the recall include: AR-15 A4s with serial numbers from CAR022851 through CAR023250; Carbines from CR036354 to CR099599 and CR713001 to CR722100; M4 Carbines CR716801 through CR721500; and M4A1 Carbines from CR021580 to CR022024. Not all Colt MSRs within the noted serial number range are subject to this recall and the website offers easy, step-by-step instructions to determine if a particular firearm is affected. Customer service agents will also assist anyone who needs additional help.
Affected owners will receive packing material and a prepaid FedEx shipping label for returning the gun for service at no charge. Only the lower receiver of the gun needs to be sent to Colt’s West Hartford, CT, headquarters for the hammer replacement. The company’s FAQ explains, “It is a quick repair and Colt will make every effort to perform the upgrade and ship your MSR back to you within fourteen (14) days of receipt.” Owners who have installed an aftermarket trigger should still visit the website or call customer service to determine if their gun is subject to the recall.
