A man in White Settlement, Tex., defended himself and his family members when his brother-in-law violently attempted to break into their apartment on May 21, 2021.

The incident started around noon that Saturday when the man's sister, who lived in an upstairs apartment, got into a dispute with her husband that turned violent. In fear, the sister took her three children and fled to her brother's downstairs apartment to get away from the husband. The husband soon followed downstairs to the door of the apartment, 12-ga. shotgun in hand, and demanded that he be let in to see his children.

When the sister refused, the husband fired several blast from his shotgun through the front door. Out of fear for his own life and the lives of other family members, the brother armed himself with an AR-style rifle and returned fire. Several rounds found their mark, subduing the assailing brother-in-law. He was taken to a local medical center, where he died of his wounds.

None of the children inside the apartment were injured during the incident. The brother has cooperated with police and has not been charged. (nbcdfw.com, Dallas, Tex., 05/21/2021)

A South Bend, Ind., man was in an upstairs bedroom of his home when he heard noises at his front door. Arming himself, the resident went downstairs and found the front door kicked in. He saw an intruder and when the man moved toward him, the resident fatally shot the armed intruder. Police did not charge the resident in the shooting, saying he had the legal right to use deadly force.
