The Heckler & Koch 416 5.56x45 mm NATO short-stroke gas piston carbine is a successful select-fire carbine that has been used around the Western world by military and special forces groups. Heckler & Koch partnered with Umarex of Germany to produce a new rimfire copy of the center-fire 416, the HK416D .22 LR.

The HK416D is a .22 LR chambered blowback-action, semi-automatic carbine that copies the center-fire gas piston 416 select-fire carbine. Unlike other .22-cal. AR-inspired rifles on the market that have the receiver sets made of polymer, the HK416D has an upper and lower receiver that are made of aluminum. It features many of the same aesthetics and features of the center-fire 416, including the proprietary 416 magazine well shape, color coded safety selectors, HK-style grip and telescoping stock, as well as the flattop upper receiver with a Picatinny rail segment.

The 16.1" barrel mimics the government-profiled 5.56x45 mm NATO barrels found on the 416, and there is even a simulated gas block underneath the front end of the handguard as found on the center-fire gas piston version. The handguard is free-floating hand has a Picatinny rail segment across the top with M-LOK compatible slots running along the sides and bottom. It comes with folding iron sights that attach to the Picatinny rail and the grip is hollowed with a storage compartment door at the bottom.

Other features simulated on this blow-back recreation are a functional forward-assist, spring-loaded dust cover, and last round hold-open. The controls are much like any other AR-type platform with the same safety, magazine release and charging handle locations. The HK416 .22 LR breaks open through the use of a push-pin similar to AR-type platforms as well. H&K will be offering 10-, 20- and 30-round .22 LR magazines for this rimfire carbine.
